The Question

What happens when you change and the relationship has not caught up yet?

Relationships are partly built from repetition. People learn who apologizes first, who takes responsibility, who keeps the peace, who decides and what each person can be counted on to do.

When one person changes, those patterns can stop fitting before the relationship has found a replacement. New boundaries can feel like rejection. Different priorities can look like distance. An internal change may be real even when the other person cannot see it.

Lorri will focus on that adjustment: how to describe what has changed, which old roles still belong, where your responsibility ends and how to leave room for the other person’s experience of the relationship.
